Alaska 2003

Days 6 and 7

Starting up the Alaska Highway

Day 6: Dawson Creek to Tetsa River

Tad at the beginning of the Alaska Highway

After a short ride from Grande Prairie to Dawson City, that was made more difficult by the horrendous wind that we would learn to deal with for the next few days, we made it to the beginning of the Alcan, grabbed some breakfast, and took a few pictures.   (Tad & Otter) (Adam & Otter)

The Alaska Highway

The Alaska Highway started out traversing some incredible forests that seemed to go on forever....that's because they pretty much did.  Pick a direction, and if you walk that way, it will be days if ever you see another human.  That's not just because of the bears either.  We saw a number of black bears at the side of the road today, along with a moose and a herd of Caribou.  As the highway went on, the road started through some big elevations - breathtaking views.  Lots of variety in the road today, from rolling hills to snowcapped mountains.  We made it to Tetsa River Campground for the night.  I enjoyed a quiet moment along the river, and the beautiful wild roses throughout the park.  The mosquitoes weren't too bad at this point, but they were definitely getting worse.

Day 7: Tetsa River to Simpson Lake along the Campbell

A lake along the Alaska Highway

We stopped just a few miles up the road at the Tetsa River Lodge for coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls before continuing up the Alcan.  Spectacular ride, despite the continuing rain.  More beautiful lakes, lots of Dall Sheep, moose, and more black bears.  Incredible country up here, and I thought the ride of yesterday was great.  It was but this was even better, especially the area around Muncho Lake.  When we got to the Liard Hot Springs, we took the advice from the locals and stopped to take a soak. The sign forest in Watson Lake

We crossed into the Yukon and into even more desolation.  Made a quick stop in Watson Lake for supplies, and to check out the sign forest.  The sign forest was huge - signs from all over the world.

The start of the Campbell Highway

We then started up the Campbell Highway, our first dirt road, in the rain.   The road wasn't too bad, and knobbies were great, providing excellent traction.   The bikes were filthy by the time we got to Simpson Lake.  We found another great campground there along another crystal clear lake, with even more beautiful flowers all around us.  No need for earplugs to sleep tonight - not a sound could be heard.  We were officially way out there, and it felt great.
